Artist's Statement

In my work, I explore the (photographic) visibility and materialisation of radiation, particularly radioactivity. Artistic practice, academic writing, and research in archives and in the field are interconnected parts of this inquiry.

In accordance with my understanding of artistic research, I work discursively and across disciplines. In my artistic and image-based practice, I use serial methods, investigate media and materials, and reflect on the processes involved. Rather than focusing on the production of individual works of art, I am interested in what remains unexplored beyond established classifications and conventional formats of presentation. My aim is to generate knowledge at the margins of established fields of inquiry.

I consider several aspects of the relationship between artistic and scientific research particularly productive: a) The experiment is shaped by chance and by so-called errors, which can become productive, particularly when researchers and artists approach their object of inquiry without fully knowing the outcome in advance (cf. Hans-Jörg Rheinberger’s concept of the experimental system). b) The research process, the researcher or artist, and the resulting knowledge are interrelated; research results can therefore never be regarded as entirely independent of the conditions of their production. c) The strict separation between subject and object can become an obstacle within the research process and can be reconsidered through the concept of the agential (cf. Karen Barad’s Agential Realism).

These aspects point to productive correspondences between scientific and artistic research and invite a reconsideration of their respective approaches. Within artistic research, I consider the process itself to be central rather than treating the finished work as its sole outcome. Artistic practice involves an awareness of how something comes into being: which decisions were made, when, and why?

In this sense, artistic research can generate knowledge through a processual interplay between words and images, in which each participates in the translation of the other.
